Entry Requirements: A minimum of a grade 6 in five subjects at GCSE, including a 7-6 in Combined Science, or grade 6 in Separate Science.

Why study this course? 

Studying Biology gives you a deep understanding of how living organisms function and interact — from cells and
genetics to ecosystems and evolution. It builds a strong foundation for fields like medicine, veterinary science, and biomedical research, while developing skills in data analysis, critical thinking, and experimentation. Beyond
academics, Biology links to real-world issues such as health, climate change, and biotechnology, inspiring curiosity and scientific reasoning.

What will I study?

The AQA A Level Biology course explores the structures, functions, and interactions that support all living things. In Year 1, you’ll study the chemistry of life — including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and DNA — alongside cell structure, membrane transport, the immune system, and how organisms exchange substances through gas exchange and circulation.

In Year 2, you’ll focus on energy transfer in photosynthesis, respiration, and ecosystems, as well as nervous and hormonal control, genetics, evolution, and biotechnology. Throughout the course, you’ll complete twelve core practicals to develop your experimental and analytical skills.

What skills will I gain and where will this take me?

In Biology, you’ll develop a wide range of scientific and transferable skills valuable for both further study and future careers. Through practical investigations, you’ll learn to plan experiments, use lab equipment safely, collect and analyse data, and evaluate results. Collaborative work strengthens teamwork and communication skills, while the course also builds strong mathematical and data-handling abilities, including interpreting graphs, using statistical tests, and calculating biological rates.
